Levi

Historically, the film industry has not acknowledged African Americans in the same light as it has its European Counter parts. We see this often in nominations for acting, producing, directing, and films. This, however, has not stopped African American people from attempting to attain the same acknowledgment that they, too, deserve. Khalil Carr, is a great example of someone that will succeed at changing the narrative and showing people that all things can be attainable with persistence and motivation.
Who is Khalil Carr?
Khalil Carr, 20, is currently a Senior at Buffalo State University studying Public Relations and Advertising with a concentration on Media Production. Carr was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. He is an executive producer, actor, and screenwriter. Carr loves filmmaking and entertaining! Recently, he debuted his first featured film ‘Levi’ at Buffalo’s North Park Theatre. Levi is a film about a young man living a double life making risky decisions. Carr is the youngest black filmmaker in Buffalo, New York. When asked what Levi means to him Carr said, “Levi means so much to me, it’s more than just a name I refer to it as my first born, something I help create and bring to life. Levi to me means opportunity and new beginnings.”

Khalil describes that he has faced adversity on his career path. “As a Black 20 Year old College student from Buffalo, I think already there are obstacles to begin with. But funding became difficult, support from people in the industry was lack there of and it became super discouraging during filming,” Carr says. Despite any adversity that Carr has faced he has come out on top and in my opinion he will go on to do bigger and better things and pave the way for others. Carr is preparing for the bright future ahead of him and he is “super ready to write my next feature film, and ready to have start working by Fall of 2023!”
Biggest Film Influences
Carr’s biggest influences in film are Duece King, Spike Lee, Jordan Peele, Ryan Coogler, The Wayans and Quinta Brunson!
Carr’s Advice to Aspiring actors, Writers, or Producers
We all impress upon each other in some way, form or fashion. Sometimes others can inspire us to do the things that we may not have the faith in ourselves to do. To aspiring actors, writers, and producers-“Please get up and do it! You won’t regret it,” Carr says.
