Raye of Light

Historically, women have been seen as feeble and meek individuals. This gender stereotype left women feeling that they were in fact their stereotypes and that they hadn’t too much more to offer to themselves or others. Despite this, women have overcome these stereotypes and continue to do so. Women have fought for their right to be creative and overcome battles that are often stigmatized.
To celebrate Women’s History Month I wanted to acknowledge Rachel Keen, better known as Raye. She is a 25-year-old British singer songwriter. She is a warrior and she is not afraid to stand up for herself and speak out against those who’ve wronged her.
In February 2023, Raye released her debut Album (as an independent artist) titled, ‘My 21st Century Blues’. Raye explains to Genius.com that this album highlights many of her personal experiences as well as her battle with alcohol and substance abuse. One of her songs ‘Escapism’ exploits some of these experiences. The more I listen to this song, the more I connect with it in a general sense of heartbreak and disappointment in life. Needless to say this song has drawn me in.

It is imperative to understand that people that are famous (in any capacity) can fall victim to being human and making mistakes. While people often hold a candles to these individuals or put them on a pedestal they are not without flaw. Anyone can become a victim of circumstance.
